What is more universal yet personal, ancient yet constantly renewed, ordinary yet precious, shared yet individual, as breath?
Breathing is unique in being either automatic OR deliberate, so occupies a special place in physiology, and also in yoga.
In this workshop, we will begin by learning stretches and positions that open the shoulder girdle, rib cage, abdomen and pelvic floor to enhance deep breathing.
We will examine the natural breath as it is before any manipulation is attempted. The subjective (felt) anatomy of the breath, how muscular actions contribute to breathing, and the relationship between pranayama, asana, the bandhas (energy restraints) and concentration/meditation will all be studied.
A variety of traditional Pranayama techniques will be taught, giving students the tools to undertake their own in-depth study, which has the power to transform their daily lives and enhance their spiritual journey.
